Tobie Bastian was born and raised in France but he also holds a Swiss passport. He then went to Germany to study classical music and later economics. He still lives there, and he married a Greek social anthropologist so that their toddler will now have to learn three languages at once but also be able to choose between four nationalities.

He deeply regrets that he was not more interested in photography in 2004, when Gianni Berengo Gardin did a book (L'altro sguardo-Mit anderen Augen-A distinct regard) about the two big European youth orchestras and chose him as his main character.

Even if he makes his living as principal double bass player in an opera house, he still loves the arts and started to photograph in 2015, when he discovered his great-grandfather Leica III.

So now a few 10.000s pictures later (after switching to a digital Leica) and more important with the help of quite a few photo books and workshops with Nikos Economopoulos (Magnum Photos) he tries to find a way to connect his background as a musician and his passion for well-composed, ambiguous and humorous photography.

He is based in Kaiserslautern and available for assignments.
